The Cost of Conflict

Are you angry at someone? Yes / No
Are you angry at something? Yes / No
Are you frustrated? Yes / No
Are you resigned about an issue at work....and now just ignoring it? Yes / No

If you answered YES to any of these questions, even referring to the simplest of situation, it will cost you and your organisation if it is not effectively being dealt with. Not dealing with the 'problem' that you see, but the core/root of the cause. Now you are looking to address character, attitude and relationships and not someone or something.

Achieving the successful outcome you desire one can not rely on standard training programs, corporate coaching models, employment law & HR interventions, or business consulting theories. What will get you to where you want to be is a combination of coaching, consulting and mentoring applied by someone with personal experience. Someone you can relate to, connect with and trust. No pretense or trying to be wise.

Conflict can be costly to an organization and to you. The trouble isn't necessarily the fact that conflict exists. It's how we deal with those conflicts or what happens when they aren't resolved. The impact of conflict in the workplace can be devastating to the parties involved, to colleagues and teams, to clients, and to the business as a whole. Some of the results of unresolved conflict in the workplace include:

- Stress, frustration, and anxiety
- Employee turnover
- Strained relationships
- Grievances and litigation
- Increased client complaints
- Loss of productivity
- Absenteeism
- Injury, accidents & Sabotage
- Sick leave & Disability claims

These symptoms of unresolved conflict are a significant cost factor in organizations. Take a look at some of the facts and figures below. How much is conflict costing your organization?

Internal conflict and tension cost the American economy $336billion last year alone. What is the cost to your company? A cost that you are not even aware of until you are made aware of it. Yet you as a CEO, Director or Manager are aware of tension and conflict areas in your company!

At any given time an average of 70% of your staff are ‘disengaged’ in their performance. What is 70% of your total wage bill per month? Imagine if this percentage drops to 50% or less, what would your business look like then?

What does ‘disengaged staff’ mean?

Staff that are at work but not actively busy with work related matters are referred to as ‘disengaged staff’. A study done in 2009 found that 70% of all staff are disengaged at any given time. Be it internal conflict amongst staff, personal issues at home distracting you at work or a general inability to focus on your goals.
This is a troubling number. Look at how much you are getting done with only 30% of your employees actively engaged. Think how much more you could accomplish if you raise that number to 50% or 70%? There is an enormous pool of untapped potential in the 70% of your workforce that are not giving you their all. The question is how you get them engaged.
The financial impact on your company is astounding. A survey done in America established the cost to companies of keeping actively disengaged employees due to decreased productivity and performance’ at around $300 BILLION annually!

This does not include:
- labour law & legal costs
- staff turnover & HR related costs (sick leave)
- loss of business due to client withdrawal

Workplace Conflict Statistics

Here are some statistics that reflect the cost of conflict in organizations:

• 30-42% of managers' time is spent reaching agreement with others when conflicts occur (Watson, C. and Hoffman, R., "Managers as Negotiators," Leadership Quarterly 7.)

• It is estimated that more than 65% of performance problems result from strained relationships between employees -- not from deficits in individual employees' skill or motivation.

• It costs 1.5 times the position salary to replace the employee in it (Drake Beam Morin, 2000).

• It is estimated that sexual harassment claims alone are costing each Fortune 500 company $6.7 million per year, with costs for smaller companies being proportionately burdensome.

• Recent studies find that more than two-thirds of managers spend more than 10% of their time handling workplace conflict and 44% of managers spend more than 20% of their time in conflict-related issues.

• A number of surveys indicate that people in all occupations report the most uncomfortable, stress-producing parts of their jobs are the interpersonal conflicts that they experience on a daily basis between themselves and co-workers or supervisors.
